Making The Best of the Outdoor Area of Your Pub
Because the outside area of your pub is the first impression customers have of your business, it should be kept clean, tidy and well maintained. Doing this is the first step towards getting more customers in your bar. If the outside of your pub looks scruffy, tired and uninviting, customers are less likely to come into your pub.
Outside presentation is really important. Flower baskets and window boxes will add colour and carefully positioned bins will help keep the environment free from litter. Windows should be kept clean and the actual building itself should also be well maintained.
Try to keep smoking areas out of the way of the pub entrance. There is nothing more off putting for non smokers than having to walk through a cloud of smokers when they enter your pub. By having a designated smoking area that is comfortable and located out of the way you can use signs to encourage customers towards it.
Make sure your outdoor seating and garden furniture is in good condition. Repair or replace damaged furniture and revive tables and benches with a coat of stain or paint. If you have limited space outside then 'stack and fold' furniture can be stored away in a protective environment during the winter months when it isn’t being used.
During the summer months, place soft cushions on benches to make them more comfortable to sit on. Parasols are a must, particularly for family pubs where parents like to keep young children out of the sun. Keep parasols and bases clean.
If you have the space, consider setting up a play area in the garden. If children are enjoying themselves their parents are more likely to be happy and stay longer. Our Kids Activity Packs are another way to keep children occupied while sitting at the table. They are cost effective and great to give out as freebies when families order a meal.
If you have not done so already, install outdoor heaters to keep customers warm in the longer summer and autumn evenings. Heaters around the smoking area are also a good idea to ensure customers more comfortable when they have a cigarette.
Car parks should also be kept in good condition. Spaces should be clearly marked and the surface free from potholes.
The outside of your pub is one if not the most important place to advertise, especially if your pub relies on passing trade. Chalkboards are one of the best ways to advertise. There are many different types to choose from and they vary in size. Keep chalkboards well maintained and if possible, ensure your designs are regularly changed and stand out. Position them where they will be most effective.
Banner advertising is also very effective. Placed higher up, banners can be seen from further away and are great for advertising events, promotions and facilities to passing drivers. Keep the message short and to the point and make sure that banners are kept clean.
The outside of your pub reflects your business as a whole. Even if the inside is spotless, if the outside looks a mess then customers won’t get that far! Look at the outside of your pub from your customer’s point of view. Can you see the advertising? Do the offers stand out? Is everything clean and tidy?
